Women’s squash sweeps Tufts, loses to Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. — The Bates College women’s squash team debuted its 2006-07 season with a 9-0 loss at Dartmouth following a 9-0 sweep of Tufts University.

Although Dartmouth proved too strong for Bates, the Bobcats showed great strength at the top of their lineup against Tufts, said coach John Illig. Bates is playing without three starting juniors who are abroad this semester, but first-years Hannah Laverty (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Whitney Roller (Haverford, Pa.) at the Nos. 2 and 4 positions, respectively. Senior Kelsey Engman (Haverford, Pa.), who has stepped into the No. 1 spot on the team this year, easily defeated her Tufts opponent 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 in a dominant display.

The Bobcats now look ahead to the Dec. 1-2 Wesleyan Round Robin, where they will play George Washington, Middlebury, Connecticut College and Mount Holyoke.
