Beckwith named Maine Co-Player of the Week

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College sophomore forward Val Beckwith was named Co-Player of the Week by the Maine Women’s Basketball Coaches Association on Monday.
Beckwith (Woburn, Mass./Woburn) scored a career-high 21 points in Bates’ season-opening 84-68 win over SUNY Geneseo on Friday, then posted two more career highs the next day with 22 points and 11 rebounds in Bates’ 75-64 win over Babson in the championship game of the Babson Invitational. Beckwith shot a combined 16-for-28 (.571) from the floor and was named the tournament MVP.
An All-Rookie Team selection last season by the MWBCA, Beckwith shares Player of the Week honors with Maine Maritime senior forward Alyssa Burns.
Also for Bates, first-year forward Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) was named to the Rookie Honor Roll in the MWBCA’s weekly report. Yanofsky averaged 8.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocked shots in Bates’ two wins.
