Bates pentathlon exhibits impressive field

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates first-year Erik Born led the host Bobcats with a second-place finish, behind overall leader Jared Engelking of Tufts University Saturday at the Bates College Pentathlon.
All 10 competitors in the men’s field qualified to compete at the New England Division III Men’s Indoor Championships, which will be held at Bates in February.
Born (Westbrook, Maine) scored 3,034 points, vaulting him to eighth place on Bates’ all-time performance list in the pentathlon. He was followed closely behind by senior teammate Andrew Tibbetts (Dedham, Mass.) in third place with 2,935, ninth on Bates’ all-time list, and first-year Noah Glick (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.), who scored 2,896 points to finish in fifth place and crack Bates’ all-time list at No. 10.
Senior Sam Murphy (St. Paul, Minn.) also qualified for New Englands by scoring 2,527 points.

Only Bates athletes competed on the women’s side, with sophomore Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) scoring 2,705 points for first place, only 35 points off of her personal record. Her performance includes personal bests in the long jump (4.89 meters) and shot put (7.75 meters). Alexander qualified for both the New England Division III Championships, which will be held at the University of Southern Maine in February, as well as the ECAC Indoor Championships.
First-year Lily Gordon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) had an impressive debut in the pentathlon, scoring 2,163 points to also qualify for New Englands.
