Women’s basketball topples host Salem State, 71-48

SALEM, Mass. — The Bates College women’s basketball team displayed a balanced attack in coasting to a 71-48 third-place game victory over Salem State College Saturday afternoon at the Salem State Christmas Tournament at James Twohig Gymnasium.
The Bobcats (6-4) raced out to a 40-26 lead at the break and never looked back in handing the Lady Vikings their second consecutive loss.
Sophomore forward Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) paced the visitors with a game-high 23 points, while junior teammate Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) added 16 and a game-high 10 rebounds, notching her sixth double-double of the season. Junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) handed out a game-high nine assists, as 10 players scored for Bates. The Bobcats outrebounded the Vikings by a 50-36 margin.
Beckwith was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the two games.
The Lady Vikings (6-3) received a team-high 14 points from junior forward Lindsey Watkins (Wareham, Mass.) and 12 points from freshman forward Katie Bielonko (Chicopee, Mass.). Freshman forward Kristen Agrella (Dracut), playing in just her second collegiate contest, pulled down a team-high nine boards.
Bates next plays Bridgewater State College on Jan. 2 in the opening round of the Williams College Winter Classic.
