No. 9 Bates women play tough against national champion Yale

LEWISTON, Maine — The Yale University squash teams showed form befitting one of the top college teams in the U.S. in a visit to Bates on Saturday, as both the Bulldogs’ women’s and men’s teams registered 8-1 victories, while the host Bobcats had some impressive performances of their own.
The match is believed to be the first visit to Bates by any Yale athletic team.
The No. 9 Bates women (5-2) registered a point at the No. 9 spot in an 8-1 loss to the No. 2 Bulldogs, the three-time defending national champions.
Bates sophomore Margot Webel (Locust Valley, N.Y.) topped Yale’s Katie Mendel 6-9, 9-7, 9-6, 9-6. Also playing well for the Bobcats was senior co-captain Kelsey Engman at the No. 1 spot, losing 1-9, 7-9, 1-9 against Yale’s Lauren McGery.
The Bates women next play at Colby on Jan. 10.
