LEWISTON, Maine — The Yale University squash teams showed form befitting one of the top college teams in the U.S. in a visit to Bates on Saturday, as both the Bulldogs’ women’s and men’s teams registered 8-1 victories, while the host Bobcats had some impressive performances of their own.
The match is believed to be the first visit to Bates by any Yale athletic team.
The No. 5 Yale men won at every spot but at the top over the No. 13 Bates men, as junior two-time All-American Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) shook off an early deficit to beat the Bulldogs’ No. 1 player, Nick Chirls, by a 4-9, 9-4, 9-1, 9-3 score. Another very strong performance for Bates came at No. 3, where senior co-captain Gary Kan (Hong Kong) lost 3-9, 4-9, 6-9 against Homing Chu, a fellow citizen of Hong Kong.
The Bates men (2-2) are next at national champion Trinity on Jan. 12.
