A veritable throng crowded around Court 3 at the Bates Squash Center on Saturday night, in anticipation of a high-level matchup between Bates junior two-time All-American Ricky Weisskopfand the No. 1 singles player from perennial power Yale University, senior Nick Chirls.Chirls got out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first game and won it 9-4, but Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) regrouped to sweep the next three games for a 4-9, 9-4, 9-1, 9-3 victory. It’s the first time in the history of Bates squash that a Bobcat has defeated Yale’s top player.
Weisskopf is now 4-0 in the young season, including a 2-0 record against Ivy League opponents, having defeated Dartmouth’s Todd Wood on Nov. 18.
|Val Beckwith ’09
In her sophomore season, forward Val Beckwith has been a force for the Bates women’s basketball team on a consistent basis.After earning MVP honors at the end-of-the-year Salem State Christmas Tournament, as well as Player of the Week laurels from the NESCAC and ECAC, Beckwith kept up her high level of play by earning all-tournament honors at last week’s Williams College Winter Classic, where she averaged 14.5 points and 8.0 rebounds in games against Bridgewater State and Williams.
Scoring at a 17.7 points per game clip, Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) is averaging more than double the output of her first year at Bates. She leads the Bobcats in that category and is second in the NESCAC. She is also among the conference leaders in field goal percentage, shooting 51.6 percent from the floor.
