Men’s squash beats Stanford to complete 5-0 weekend

LEWISTON, Maine — The No. 12 nationally ranked Bates men’s squash team defeated No. 19 Stanford University 9-0 on Sunday, completing a 5-0 home weekend. The Bobcat men also scored decisive victories over Northeastern, Connecticut College, Hamilton and St. Lawrence as part of the Maine Invitational.

For Bates (10-3), first-year sensation Kush Mahan (Gainesville, Fla.) sat out most of the weekend to rest his back, and Bates players Nos. 1-7 went undefeated all weekend — junior Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador), junior Sean Wilkinson (London, England), senior Gary Kan (Hong Kong), first-year Jordan Greenberg (Malvern, Pa.), sophomore Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Marc Taggart (Skippack, Pa., sophomore Deacon Chapin (Cambridge, Mass.), and sophomore Charlie Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.). At the No. 1 position, two-time All-American Weisskopf is now 12-1 on the season, and has recorded wins against the No. 1 players from Dartmouth, Yale, Cornell, and Stanford.

In this weekend’s upcoming matches, Bates will have a shot to take down the new No. 9 team, the U.S. Naval Academy, as Bates travels back to Yale for another round robin.  A win against Navy would move Bates to the No. 9 spot nationally.  Bates men defeated Navy in a dual match last year, but this year both teams are greatly improved and the match will be close.  The Bates men’s only losses this year are to Dartmouth, Yale and national champion Trinity.
