Drake, Swenson, Perry lead swim teams at Tufts tri-meet

MEDFORD, Mass. — The Bates College swimming and diving teams recorded numerous outstanding performances in a tri-meet against Tufts University and Wheaton (Mass.) College on Saturday at Tufts. The Bates men’s team outscored Wheaton 132-104 and lost to Tufts 188-84, while the women’s team lost 206-92 to the hosts and 192-106 to Wheaton.
First-year Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) continued her excellent season with victories in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 1:02.41 in the 100 edged Wheaton’s Iris Meehan by .41 seconds, while her 200 time of 2:13.82 was over three seconds ahead of second-place Michelle Caswell of Tufts.
Bates junior Emilie Swenson (Old Saybrook, Conn.) was another event winner for the Bobcats, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:03.85, .20 seconds ahead of Wheaton’s Stephanie Conelias.
Bates junior Dan Perry (Exeter, N.H.) had an interesting day of diving, winning the 1-meter event with 225.90 points over Tufts’ Robert Matera (215.70), before Matera edged Perry in the 3-meter by .25 points, 226.00-225.75.
Bates competes at Wellesley College next Saturday, Feb. 3.
