Men’s squash team beats Navy in marathon battle, 5-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. and WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The No. 12 nationally ranked Bates men’s squash team scored an epic 5-4 victory over rival and ninth-ranked Navy on Saturday as part of the Bobcats’ 3-1 weekend in a round robin at Yale University.
Bates also defeated the University of Rochester on Friday and Denison University on Saturday by 8-1 scores, before falling 8-1 at Williams College on Sunday.
In one of the most drawn-out matches in their recent history, the Bobcats (13-4) outlasted the Midshipmen in a match featuring three five-set individual matches and plenty of points for the respective losers at each position. Key victories were recorded by Bates sophomores Chip Russell (West Hartford, Conn.) at the No. 6 position and Charlie Johnson (Atlanta, Ga.) at the No. 9 spot. Russell came back from a 2-1 deficit to win the last two sets, 9-2 and 9-6, while Johnson beat his opponent 9-5 in the final set after his opponent tied the match at 2-all with a 10-9 win in the fourth set. The win avenged a 5-4 defeat to Navy last season in a similarly epic battle.
The Bobcats also got back at Denison, which upset Bates in the same matchup last season. Against Rochester, hotshot freshman Jim Bristow handed Bates’ two-time All-American junior Ricky Weisskopf (San Salvador, El Salvador) only his second loss of the season at the No. 1 position, 5-9, 7-9, 10-8, 9-1, 9-2, but the Bobcats won at the final eight spots for the easy victory. The Williams match on Sunday went the opposite way, with Weisskopf beating Ephs junior Jon Barry 9-2, 9-4, 9-5, but the Ephs winning at the other eight positions.
Bates will next play at the NESCAC Tournament Feb. 2-4 at Trinity College.
