Capone, Gauthier star at State of Maine indoor championships

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates senior Matt Capone won the Jim Westcott Most Valuable Track Athlete Award and Bates junior Noah Gauthier won the Peter Goodrich Most Valuable Field Athlete Award Saturday night at the 2007 State of Maine Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at Bates’ Walter Slovenski Indoor Track.
Bates finished second in the team score to Bowdoin for the second straight year. The Polar Bears scored 181.50 points for the title, followed by Bates with 163, the University of Southern Maine with 93.50, and Colby with 83.
Both Capone (Auburn, Maine) and Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) won two individual events at the meet. Capone took first in the 55-meter dash in 6.63 seconds, .05 ahead of Bowdoin’s Lamont White. He also won the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.97 seconds, beating out USM’s Jimmy Sawyer by .24 seconds. Capone also ran a leg of Bates’ winning 4×400 relay team, along with junior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.), first-year James Packard (Guilford, Conn.) and senior Sam Thomas (Richmond, Va.). With a time of 3:30.99, Bates beat second-place Southern Maine in the event by 3.47 seconds.
Gauthier, who won the Goodrich Award for the second straight year, captured first place in the shot put at 15.00 meters, a hefty 91 centimeters beyond Bowdoin runner-up Luke Fairbanks. He also won the 35-pound weight throw in 17.38 meters, as Bates filled out the top four spots in the event with junior Matt Lopez (Lexington, Mass.), first-year Mark Liu (Lexington, Mass.) and junior Graham Raymond (Westfield, Mass.).
Other event winners for Bates included junior Emmanuel Drabo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) in the triple jump (13.13 meters), first-year Noah Glick (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) in the high jump (1.86 meters) and Thomas in the 600 meters (1:24.73).
