Nordic team helps Bates to another strong finish at UVM
STOWE, Vt. — The Bates College Nordic ski teams helped achieve a third fifth-place finish in as many carnivals this weekend at the University of Vermont Winter Carnival.
With 409 points, Bates beat out Williams (406), St. Lawrence (401) and Colby (388) for the third time in three weeks.
Competing at the Trapp Family Lodge, the Bates women’s team placed seventh in the 15K Classic Mass Start race on Friday and eighth in the 3×6 Women’s Freestyle Relay. Sophomore Haleigh Armstrong (Vail, Colo.) was the Bobcats’ top finisher on Friday with a 22nd-place time of 55:48.0. Not far behind were senior Kaitlyn McElroy (Bethel, Maine) in 27th and senior Emily Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) in 33rd (57:39.3).
The Bates women’s trio of Armstrong, sophomore Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.) and Poole came in 11th out of 19 teams in Saturday’s relay.
Bates first-year Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) led the Bobcats in Friday’s Men’s 20K Classic Mass Start race, coming in 16th out of 65 competitors in 1:04:38.6. Sophomore Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine) was 24th, sophomore Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) was 26th and sophomore Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) was 33rd.
Bates’ trio in the Men’s 3×6 Freestyle Relay on Saturday placed 18th and consisted of first-year Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.), Cooper and Ellefson.
Bates will compete next weekend at the Dartmouth Carnival.
