Bates women win at Colby, 87-74

WATERVILLE, Maine — Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) had a game-high 25 points and Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished with 12 assists to lead the Bates College women’s basketball team to an 87-74 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference play Friday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium. It was the second-highest scoring output by the Bobcats this season.
Bates (14-8, 6-2 NESCAC) also got a career-high 17 points and five 3-point shots from senior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.). Beckwith was 10-for-14 from the field, while Barton also had 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Bobcats.
Colby (6-16, 1-7) led 23-18 with 8:02 left in the first half, but the Bobcats used an 11-0 run to take a 29-23 lead. The Mules fought back to take a 34-33 margin before Bates scored the final basket for a 35-34 halftime margin.
With the score tied 39-39 in the second half, Bates used another 11-0 run to go up 50-39 and steadily pulled away. Katie McCabe (Watertown, Conn.), Tracy Nale (Waterville, Maine) and Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) all had 21 points for Colby. McCabe also finished with 10 rebounds and Cappelloni had seven boards. Kathleen Nicholson (Tuftonboro, N.H.) had seven assists, while Lauren Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had eight rebounds and five assists.
Bates finishes the regular season tomorrow at Bowdoin (3 p.m.). The Bobcats have earned the No. 3 seed in the NESCAC Championships and will host a quarterfinal game next Saturday against an opponent to be determined tomorrow.
