Men’s nordic ski team’s strong weekend propels Bobcats

STOWE, Vt. — An excellent weekend for the Bates College men’s Nordic ski team continued Saturday with a fifth-place showing in the 3×10 Men’s Freestyle Relay race at the Dartmouth College Winter Carnival. The carnival’s Nordic events were moved to the Trapp Touring Center from the originally scheduled Oak Hill.
Bates’ combined ski teams scored 478.5 points to finish sixth in the Carnival, just behind St. Lawrence (488) and ahead of Williams (459.5) and Colby (448).
Bates sophomore Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.), first-year Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) and first-year Dylan McGuffin (Northfield, N.H.) teamed up to finish fifth in the relay out of 22 trios in 1:22:14.0. Bates’ second men’s trio of sophomore Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine), sophomore Connor Cushman (Portland, Maine) and junior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) came in 14th.
The men’s team’s effort came on the heels of a third-place showing out of 12 teams in Friday’s 20K Mass Start Classic race. Ellefson led the Bobcats by finishing in eighth place out of 73 racers in 1:04.25.8. He was followed closely behind by Whiton in 10th (1:05:29.8) and Cooper in 18th (1:06:12.3). Cushman was 40th, followed by McGuffin in 44th and Dunlap in 58th.
Bates sophomore Haleigh Armstrong (Vail, Colo.) led the Bobcats to eighth place out of 12 teams in the Women’s 15K Mass Start Classic race on Friday, coming in 22nd overall out of 64 competitors with a time of 57:36.9. Behind her were senior Emily Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) in 38th, first-year Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) in 39th, sophomore Gretchen Grebe (Carbondale, Colo.) in 41st and senior Lauren Jacobs (Winthrop, Maine) in 42nd.
The Bates trio of Poole, Armstrong and Samuelson finished 11th out of 21 teams in Saturday’s 3×5 Women’s Freestyle Relay, with a time of 50:35.1.
Bates competes next weekend at the Williams College Winter Carnival.
