Tufts’ Scott wins NED3 pentathlon; Bates’ Miley finishes second

LEWISTON, Maine — The New England Division III Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championships got under way on Friday at Bates College’s Walter Slovenski Track, with Tufts University’s Nathan Scott winning the pentathlon.
Scott scored 3,404 points, leading three Jumbos in the top five of the event. Bates junior co-captain John Miley (Hanson, Mass.) finished second with 3,364 points, just 17 points shy of the school record held by Joe Northrup ’05. Miley’s time of 2:44.54 in the 1,000-meter run was the best in the field and earned him 824 points.
James Spaulding of the University of Southern Maine was third with 3,295 points, while Tufts’ Fielding Pagel and Jared Engelking rounded out the top five.
While Miley scored eight points for the host Bobcats, first-year Noah Glick (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) took eighth place to earn one additional team point, with 3,162 points, including an event-best high jump of 6-03.5. Bates first-year Erik Born (Westbrook, Maine) and Bates senior Andrew Tibbetts (Dedham, Mass.) finished 11th and 12th out of 20 competitors with 3,082 and 2,895 points, respectively.
