NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Pre-tournament rankings held form on Sunday, as the 10th-seeded Bates College women’s squash team’s quest for a fourth straight Kurtz Cup title ended with a 6-3 loss to rival and ninth-seeded Cornell University on Sunday.
The Bobcats finish their season with a 19-8 record, the greatest number of victories ever for a Bates men’s or women’s squash team. The Bobcats also earned a final No. 10 ranking, their sixth straight year to finish ranked in the top 10 nationally.
“It was truly an exceptional year, and I’m very proud of the team,” said head coach John Illig. “Finishing first in the state and in sole possession of third place in the NESCAC tournament were both highlights.”
Winning their matches for Bates were senior co-captain Kelsey Engman (Haverford, Pa.) at the No. 1 position, junior Jenny Imrich (Cambridge, Mass.) at the sixth spot and junior Caroline Lemoine (Natick, Mass.) at the eighth spot. Sophomore Sophie Runquist (Kent, Conn.) also won at the exhibition No. 10 position. Going down in hotly contested five-set matches were junior Charlotte Gerrish (Rye, N.Y.) in the No. 4 spot and sophomore Margot Webel (Locust Valley, N.Y.) in the ninth position.
Engman and Lemoine were each undefeated at the tournament and went 5-0 in the past week. Engman’s win against Cornell was the first ever for a Bates woman in the No. 1 spot against an Ivy League competitor.
Some team members will go on to compete at the College Squash Association Individual Nationals, which take place March 2-4 at the University of Pennsylvania.
