Bates men run strong relays at Open New Englands

BOSTON — The fourth-fastest 4×400 relay in Bates College history was run Saturday at the all-division Open New England Indoor Track and Field Championships at Boston University.

Bates’ quartet of senior Matt Capone (Auburn, Maine), first-year Erik Born (Westbrook, Maine), senior Sam Murphy (St. Paul, Minn.) and senior Sam Thomas (Richmond, Va.) ran the 4×400 in 3:23.92, good for 18th place out of 25 teams from all three NCAA divisions.

Highlights for the men’s team from Friday included another relay team, the distance medley relay, running the seventh-fastest DMR in Bates history at 10:27.61. Bates’ four were sophomore C.J. Murray (North Andover, Mass.) in the 1,200-meter leg, senior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.) in the 400, sophomore Mike Watson (Mansfield, Mass.) in the 800 and junior Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) in the 1,600.

Also on Friday, Capone set a personal best mark in the indoor 200-meter dash at 22.49 seconds, good for 23rd place.

Bates competes at the ECAC Championships next weekend at Wesleyan University.
