Fahy eighth in women’s giant slalom to lead alpine ski team

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Bates junior Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) placed eighth out of 60 competitors Saturday in the women’s giant slalom, leading the women’s alpine team to fifth place out of 12 teams in the event at the Middlebury College Winter Carnival.

Bates junior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) led the men’s alpine team in the giant slalom, coming in 20th out of 62 racers at Middlebury Snow Bowl.

Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished in seventh place out of 17 teams at the Middlebury College Winter Carnival, which was also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association championships. With 604 points, the Bobcats were only 2.5 points behind Colby for sixth place and 4.0 points behind Williams in fifth.

Sophomore Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) placed 23rd, sophomore Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) came in 25th, junior Melissa Jones (Plymouth, N.H.) finished 29th and first-year Allison Martini (Fair Haven, N.J.) was 33rd for Bates.

Sampson and Thompson finished 12th and 13th, respectively, out of 71 competitors in the women’s slalom on Friday. Martini finished 29th and Jones came in 36th for the Bobcats, who placed fifth out of 10 teams in the event.

Junior Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) led the men’s team Friday with a 20th-place showing out of 75 skiers in the men’s slalom. Senior Carter Casner (North Kingstown, R.I.) came in 37th, while junior Jacob Hardy (Farmington, Maine) and junior Kevin Berry (Portsmouth, N.H.) finished 45th and 46th, respectively.

Some Bates team members will compete at the NCAA Championships, hosted by the University of New Hampshire March 7-10.
