DELAND, Fla. — The Bates College crews opened their spring season with excellent results at the Stetson Sprints on Saturday at Lake Beresford.

Bates’ two men’s Varsity 8 boats took the top two places, covering the 1,500-meter course in 4:34.1 and 4:34.8. Bates beat out the University of Florida, which had boats finish in 4:36.5 and 5:00.8, host Stetson University (5:04.2) and Embry Riddle (5:14.3).

In the Women’s Varsity 8 race, Bates’ “A” boat took second place to Nova Southeastern (5:01) in 5:06.4, while the Bobcats’ “B” boat took fourth place in 5:18.8, getting edged out of third place by the University of Florida by only 0.6 seconds. Also competing in the race were the University of Tampa (5:40.6), Embry Riddle (5:53.5) and Stetson (5:53.6).

The Bates men also took first place in the Novice 8 event at 5:11.1 over two boats from Florida, while the Bates women won the Novice 8 race as well in 5:20.5, ahead of three boats from Florida and one from Stetson.

Bates also entered in men’s and women’s pair races, with the men taking the top two spots and the women taking third place. Bates’ winning men’s pair was junior co-captain Brad Sherman (Andover, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Martone (Concord, N.H.); in second place was senior Kyle Rogers (Fayette, Maine) and junior Dylan Eberle (New Haven, Conn.). The third-place women’s pair were senior co-captains Jeanethe Falvey (Phippsburg, Maine) and Gabby Voeller (Littleton, Colo.).

The course at Lake Beresford was shortened from 2,000 meters to 1,500 due to damage and debris from tornadoes that touched down in DeLand several weeks ago.

Bates is next scheduled to host a scrimmage with the University of New Hampshire on April 7.
