LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College will send six skiers to the NCAA Skiing Championships, to be hosted by the University of New Hampshire March 7-10.

Bates came within one of last year’s school-record contingent of seven skiers to make the NCAAs, although seven skiers did qualify this year. Qualifying is based on NCAA points earned throughout the winter carnival season.

Representing the Bates women’s alpine team at NCAAs will be sophomores Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.), Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) and Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.). Junior Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) also qualified, but institutions are limited to three competitors per gender per team. This is the first time Bates has exceeded this limit, and the alpine team ties last year’s program record for NCAA qualifiers, with six.

The Bates men’s alpine team will send juniors Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) and Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.).

Representing the Bates men’s Nordic ski team at the NCAAs will be sophomore Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.).

Papineau, Thompson, Menard and Ellefson are all making their second NCAA Championship appearances, while Fahy also qualified for the second time. Sampson and Loman will be NCAA competitors for the first time.

Nordic events will be held March 7 and 9 at Jackson XC. The women’s five-kilometer and men’s 10-kilometer freestyle cross-country races will be conducted March 7. The men’s 20-kilometer and women’s 15-kilometer classical races will be held March 9.

Alpine events will run March 8 and 10 at Attitash. The men’s and women’s giant slaloms will be held March 8, with the men’s and women’s slaloms conducted March 10.

Highlights of the skiing championships will be shown on CBS at 1 p.m. Eastern time, Saturday, May 5. CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA will feature highlights of 17 different NCAA championships; each taking place during the winter season.
