JACKSON, N.H. — Bates College sophomore Sylvan Ellefson placed 27th on Friday in the Men’s 20K Free Classic race at the NCAA Skiing Championships.
Coming on the heels of his 11th-place finish in the 10K Free Technique race on Wednesday, Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) covered the 20K course at Jackson in 59:18.4, 3.1 seconds behind Alaska-Anchorage’s Paul Schauer and two places better than his finish in the same event last year in Colorado. He ranked seventh among skiers from Eastern colleges.
Ellefson earned 13 points for the combined Bates ski teams with his effort. Bates’ combined alpine and Nordic ski teams now have 131 points heading into the final day of competition at NCAAs, and the Bobcats stand in 13th place overall, between the University of Nevada (206.5) and Michigan Tech (128).
On Saturday the Championships will wrap up with the men’s and women’s slalom at Attitash, with Bobcat men Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) and Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) and Bobcat women Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.), Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) and Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) all due to compete.
