Baseball team finishes up spring trip to Florida

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — The Bates College baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the St. Norbert College Knights Saturday by scores of 18-9 and 8-5, to conclude their spring trip.

St. Norbert (7-3) got out to an early lead in Game 1, scoring six runs in the first inning, and had a 11-0 lead after three innings of play, but Bates rallied late in the game.

The Bobcats (1-5) got on the board in the fourth inning when junior Brian Mahoney ( Sudbury, Mass.) singled and was driven in on a double by junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.).

In the fifth inning the Bobcats got four runs to close the gap. Junior Alex Egelson (Fairfield, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, and sophomore Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.) reached base on an error. Junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) followed with an RBI single, and Mahoney hit another RBI single before Hood added a two-run single.

St. Norbert was able to respond with two runs apiece in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning, senior Teddy Fleming (Barrington, Ill.) led off with a triple, senior Kyle Thomas (Oshkosh, Wis.) followed with an RBI double, and senior Ryan Geshche (Janesville, Wis.) followed with an RBI double. In the fifth, Fleming added a sacrifice fly and Thomas added an RBI single.

The Bobcats were able to rally again for four runs in the sixth. Junior Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) led off with a single and was followed with a single by junior Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.). Maxwell singled to load the bases before an RBI single by senior co-captain Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.). First-year Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) then singled to drive in two runs.

Junior Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) took the loss for the Bobcats on the mound. At the plate the Bobcats were led by Mahoney with two hits, and Egelson with two hits and a walk.

In Game 2 the Bobcats jumped out to an early lead when junior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) led off with a single and was followed by a double by Mahoney. Hood then drove them both home with a two-run single.

The Knights got on the board with one run in the first inning, and three runs in the second, with a two run home run by Fleming leading the way.

The Bobcats were able to tie the game at five in the fourth inning when Buckley led off the inning with a triple. Junior Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) followed with an RBI single, then stole second base and would later score.

Bates starting pitcher sophomore Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) had a solid start, going 4 2/3 innings in the loss.

The Knights were able to pull away for good in the fifth inning, scoring three runs with Fleming delivering an RBI triple.

The Bobcats were led in Game 2 by McCormack with three hits and a walk, Buckley with three hits, and Hogan with two.

The Bobcats will return to action with their first NESCAC games of the season at Tufts University this Friday and Saturday, March 30-31.
