Williams holds off Bobcats in men’s lacrosse, 12-10

LEWISTON, Maine — Dixon Hargrove and Michael Vrla scored four goals apiece and the Williams College men’s lacrosse team held off host Bates for a 12-10 NESCAC conference victory Saturday afternoon at Campus Avenue Field.
The Ephs (4-1, 3-0 NESCAC) scored five unanswered goals, including three straight by Hargrove (Wallingford, Pa.), in the first half to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 7-3 lead with 12:41 left to play in the second quarter.
Hargrove scored with 18 seconds left in the first quarter and added a second score just before time expired 18 seconds later for a deflating 5-3 Ephs lead.
Williams and Bates (3-2, 0-2 NESCAC) then traded goals five times until Bates senior Matt Erisman (Nantucket, Mass.) and junior Brent Morin (Hanover, N.H.) each notched unassisted tallies in the final two minutes of the game to close the gap from 12-8 to 12-10.
Erisman scored four goals for the Bobcats, Morin added three scores and senior Amadi Cisse (Hanover, N.H.) scored twice while junior Bryan Frates (Woodstock, Vt.) made four assists.
Williams first-year Richard Reuter (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three assists and sophomore Tim White (Englewood, Colo.) had two in addition to one goal.
Williams collected 41 of 59 ground balls and won 14 of 17 faceoffs by unofficial count.
Williams sophomore Michael Gerbush (Glen Head, N.Y.) made 11 saves for the Ephs; Bates senior Peter Boston (Acton, Mass.) made one save in his start, and junior Will Paddock (Denver, Colo.) made 10 saves and allowed five goals in over 42 minutes of action.
Bates will host Colby on April 4 at 7 p.m.; the Ephs play at Middlebury that night at 6.
