VanderVliet, Bobcats blank Beavers at home, 6-0
Sean VanderVliet ’08
LEWISTON, Maine — Bates junior Sean VanderVliet pitched a nine-inning, complete-game shutout as the Bobcats defeated UMaine-Farmington 6-0 on Sunday in their first home game this season.
VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) allowed the Beavers (0-3) only three hits and three walks while striking out five batters. He allowed only one UMF runner to reach third base.
The Bobcats countered with 13 hits, scoring two runs in the first inning, adding single runs in the fourth and sixth innings off of UMF sophomore starting pitcher Craig Pendleton (Arundel, Maine) and tacking on two more runs in the eighth off of senior reliever Scott Hastings (Thomaston, Maine).
Bates junior Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) went 3-for-4 and scored two runs, including a steal of home plate in the sixth. Coming up with two hits apiece were juniors Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.), Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) and Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) and first-year Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine).
Bates summoned a two-out rally in the first as Hood lined an RBI double to score Mahoney, then scored on Buckley’s single.
Buckley hit a leadoff double in the fourth and later came home on Linscott’s sacrifice fly.
Maulucci and Linscott led off the eighth with singles. Maulucci came home as senior Rob Schuler (Hanover, Mass.) reached on an error, and Linscott scored Bates’ sixth run on an RBI single by junior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.).
It was the Bobcats’ first complete-game shutout by a Bates pitcher since John Ribas ’05 blanked Tufts on May 1, 2004. VanderVliet also started and pitched nine shutout innings last season in a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut State that took 16 innings to complete.
Coming up with the Beavers’ three hits were senior Aaron Wolfe (Wilton, Maine), sophomore Tyler Hanson (Sanford, Maine) and first-year Kyle Shea (Bar Harbor, Maine).
Pendleton took the loss despite a solid six-inning performance in which he scattered nine hits and two walks while striking out six.
Bates (2-8) plays at Husson on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
