Bates junior Sean VanderVlietdominated UMaine-Farmington hitters on Sunday in the Bobcat baseball team’s home opener 6-0 win.VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) pitched a complete-game, nine-inning shutout against the Beavers, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out five. Only one UMF player reached third base all game, while the Bobcat defense played its first error-free game of the season.
It was the Bobcats’ first complete-game shutout by a Bates pitcher since John Ribas ’05blanked Tufts on May 1, 2004. VanderVliet also started and pitched nine shutout innings last season in a 1-0 win over Western Connecticut State that took 16 innings to complete.

Senior co-captain Caitlin Murphy is off to a hot start for the Bates softball team at the plate, sharing the team lead in batting average with first-yearJill Cappuccithus far at .391 — this, after struggling to a .191 average last season, following a solid sophomore campaign (.290).In the Bobcats’ opening three games of NESCAC East Division play last weekend, Murphy (Westwood, Mass.) went 4-for-7 (.571) with two doubles, three runs, an RBI and two walks while playing error-free at shortstop in Bates’ 1-2 weekend at Tufts. Her slugging percentage for the three games was .857.
