HARTFORD, Conn. — Junior RHP Tim Kiely (Swampscott, Mass.) tossed four innings and allowed four hits and one run with four strikeouts and zero walks in the first game and sophomore C Sean Killeen (Greenfield, Mass.) went 3-for-6 with two runs, a homer, and six RBIs to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a doubleheader sweep against the Bates College Bobcats in NESCAC East Division baseball action on Saturday. The Bantams won the first game 7-2 and took the second 13-9.
Trinity, ranked No. 2 in New England, improves to 17-3 overall and 4-2 in the NESCAC East while extending its winning streak to four games with a three-game sweep of the Bobcats. Bates falls to 2-11 overall and 0-6 in the division. The series was moved to Trinity with Bates as the home team due to snow in Maine earlier this week.
Killeen broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth inning of the first game with a sacrifice fly and freshman 1B Kent Graham (Longmeadow, Mass.) doubled home another run to give the Bantams a 3-1 advantage. Trinity scored three more times in the sixth frame and freshman lefty Derek Anderson (Great Falls, Va.) retired all five and struck out four of the batters he faced to save the game for Kiely.
Senior Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.) went the distance for the Bobcats, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and two walks. First-year Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine) had two of Bates’ four hits, including a double. Junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) drove in both of Bates’ runs in the game, singling Linscott home in the fourth and drawing a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.
The Bantams scored eight runs over the first two innings of the second game and outslugged the Bobcats the rest of the way. Four Bantams hit home runs, including freshman OF James Wood (Windham, N.H.), who was 2-for-5 with three RBI. Senior captain righty Jon Rappaport (East Longmeadow, Mass.) pitched four innings in relief to earn the win on the mound.
Bates tied a season high in the game with 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 effort by junior SS Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.). Sophomore Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.) clouted a three-run home run, the first of his college career, and junior 2B Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) drove in four runs, including a three-run triple in the fourth. Junior Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) went 3-for-4 with two runs and junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with two runs.
Junior Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) was credited with the loss, going five innings and allowing 11 runs (eight earned). Sophomore Chuck Murphy-Romboletti (Holyoke, Mass.) held Trinity to one run in three innings of relief.
