LEWISTON, Maine — Bates and Colby split a NESCAC baseball doubleheader Saturday at Leahey Field, with the host Bobcats taking Game 1 by a 6-0 score and losing the second game 18-9.
Colby now stands at 4-14 overall and 2-6 in the conference, while Bates moves to 3-13 overall, 1-8 in the conference.
Bates senior pitcher Griffin Finan (Bethesda, Md.) scattered six hits and two walks in a seven-inning, complete-game shutout in Game 1, moving to 2-2 on the season. Junior 1B Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) blasted a two-run home run to left-center in the first inning off of Colby sophomore Justin Clark (Brunswick, Maine) to give the Bobcats the lead for good. Bates junior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) went 2-3, including a two-run single in Bates’ three-run fifth inning, and first-year Josh Linscott (Portland, Maine) scored a pair of runs while going 1-3.
Colby exploded for 19 hits and took advantage of seven walks and five Bates errors in Game 2. Mules senior Tom Salemy (Odessa, Fla.) went 3-6 with two runs and five RBIs, including his second homer of the season. Sophomore John Murphy (Hingham, Mass.) also homered for the second time this year and went 2-4 with three runs and three RBIs. Also getting three hits for the Mules were first-year Ryan Conlon (Ridgefield, Conn.), sophomore Craig Cooper (Trumbull, Conn.) and senior Brian Liberty (Hollis, N.H.).

Bates junior Ralph Vitti (Winchester, Mass.) came on in relief of junior starter Sean VanderVliet (Meriden, N.H.) and took the loss, dropping to 0-2.
Bates center fielder Casey McCormack (Keene, N.H.) made the defensive play of the game, and possibly the season, in the first inning, when he tracked down Colby No. 3 hitter Nick Spillane’s deep fly ball and caught it while flipping completely over the outfield mesh fence, before raising his glove to show he had made the catch. McCormack’s home run robbery ended the inning and cost the Mules three runs.
Colby first-year Matt Moore (Winfield, Ill.) earned the win to go 2-2, despite allowing seven runs (five earned) over 4 2/3 innings.
Bates juniors Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) and Rob Patton (Darien, Conn.) were both 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs apiece in the game. Junior Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) was 1-2 with two runs and an RBI, and junior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) delivered a two-run single during Bates’ five-run fifth inning.
Bates will play at MIT on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
