Men’s track team wins sixth straight State of Maine outdoor title
LEWISTON, Maine — Bates College edged Bowdoin College Saturday for its sixth straight title in the annual State of Maine Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships, on a gorgeous day at the Russell Street Track. The Bobcats scored 226 points, 21 points ahead of the Polar Bears for first place.
Bates junior Noah Gauthier (Amherst, N.H.) won three events — the discus throw (145-00), the hammer throw (177-02) and the shot put (48-08.00) to take home the Frederick D. Tootel Memorial Field Athlete of the Meet Award. Colby’s Dan Vassallo set a meet and facility record in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30:52.79 to win the Alan G. Hillman Memorial Track Athlete of the Meet Award.
“Bowdoin really made it tight at the end, but our kids hung in there markably well and were able to pull it out,” said Bates coach Al Fereshetian. “A 1-2-3 sweep of the triple jump late in the meet and an outstanding finish by Steve Monsulick in the 5,000 beat back a furious run by Bowdoin. All in all, it was a great meet.”
Bates junior Emmanuel Drabo (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso) took first in the triple jump at 45-09.75 and was followed in the standings by first-year teammate Erik Born (Westbrook, Maine; 40-07.50) and junior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.; 40-06.75). Monsulick (Farmington, Maine) finished second in the 5,000 at 15:39.68, just 0.13 seconds behind Bowdoin’s Nate Krah and 0.34 seconds ahead of Bowdoin’s John Hall.
Bates senior Matt Capone (Auburn, Maine) captured first place twice, in the 100 meters (10.92) and the 200 (22.09). Also winning events for the Bobcats were first-year Noah Glick (Center Tuftonboro, N.H.) in the high jump (6-03.25) and senior Andrew Tibbetts (Dedham, Mass.) in the 400-meter hurdles (57.26).
Bates competes next Saturday at the NESCAC Championships at Middlebury.
