Bates crews notch impressive wins at home and at WPI
GREENE, Maine — Bates College hosted the annual President’s Cup regatta with CBB opponents Colby and Bowdoin Sunday on the Androscoggin River in an impressive weekend for the men’s and women’s varsity boats.
The Bates women’s first and second Varsity 8 boats were each victorious, with the Bates first varsity, currently ranked No. 10 in Divison III, cruising the 2,000-meter course to a 13-second win over No. 7 Colby, 6:44.1 to 6:57.2, while Bowdoin came in third in 7:22.5. The women’s second varsity eight topped Colby 6:54.7 to 7:02.8.
On the men’s side, Bates’ first varsity eight was edged by Colby 5:49.1 to 5:53.2, with Bates’ second boat placing third in 5:56.7. The Bates men’s novice eight won its race against Bowdoin, 6:16.8 to 6:38.4.
Colby won the Cup with 18 points, followed by Bowdoin with 15 and Bates with 11.
On Saturday, Bates competed in a regatta at Worcester, Mass., hosted by WPI and including the University of New Hampshire, Trinity, Washington College, Connecticut College, Ithaca and Colby.
Again the Bates women’s first varsity eight turned in an excellent effort, defeating the No. 2 nationally ranked Trinity boat 6:56.38 to 6:59.45 to win second place behind UNH (6:52.76). The men’s first varsity eight was also impressive, finishing second to Trinity but timing in 6:12.12 to finish ahead of WPI (6:13.25) and UNH (6:17.37), avenging a defeat to WPI a week beforehand.
Bates travels to Pittsfield, Mass., this Saturday, April 28, to row against Williams, Coast Guard and Marist.
