Buckley extends hit streak to 12 games for baseball team

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — The Bates College baseball team lost a doubleheader at Middlebury College on Sunday, by scores of 12-1 in the first game and 10-5 in the second. The two-game series was rescheduled from April 15.
The Panthers end their season winning 10 of their final 11 games for a 19-11 record.
Bates drops to 6-21 and will finish its season with a doubleheader at home against Fisher College on Monday, beginning at 2 p.m.
Bates junior Brian Buckley (Andover, Mass.) went 4-for-7 in the two games, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. He is 22-for-49 in the 12 games for a .449 average.
In game one, the Panthers struck early, scoring three runs in the first inning highlighted by an RBI double by Noah Walker. Middlebury added four more in the second, building a 7-0 advantage. A third-inning solo homer run to left center by Sam Timberg added to the lead.
The Bobcats scored their lone run in the fourth on a two-out single by first-year Tom Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.), setting the score at 8-1.
The Panthers had five players with multiple hits, as Nick Lefeber went 3-4 and Lanahan went 3-4 with three RBI. Buckley was 2-3, while junior Alex Egelson’s (Fairfield, Conn.) double was the lone extra base hit for the Bobcats.
Robert Palladino went all seven innings, giving up one earned run and scattered seven hits to improve to 4-1. Bates sophomore starter Benjamin Shwartz (Mattapoisett, Mass.) took the loss.
Bates was declared the home team in game two. In the bottom of the first, Bates scored three runs on just two hits. With the bases-loaded, Panther starter Matt Lowes walked in the first run. A sacrifice fly by Egelson plated another, while an RBI single from junior Alex Maulucci (Avon, Conn.) scored the third run.
In the third inning, the visiting Panthers erupted for five runs, including a towering three-run homer to deep left field by Lanahan. Middlebury added two more in the fourth before Timberg clubbed his second home run of the day in the fifth, building an 8-3 lead.
Bates cut the lead to 8-4 on an RBI double by sophomore Tyler Maxwell (Coventry, Vt.) in the sixth. Middlebury answered with two more runs in the seventh. A sacrifice fly by junior Erik Hood (Berlin, N.H.) scored junior Brian Mahoney (Sudbury, Mass.) to complete the scoring.
Middlebury was led by Gabe Broughton’s 3-5 game with a double and two runs scored, as Lanahan went 2-4 with the homer and a double to go with his three RBI. Junior Denis Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) and Buckley both went 2-4 to pace the Bobcats.
Lowes pitched four innings for the Panthers, giving up three hits and no earned runs to go 1-0 on the year. Sophomore Larry Hinkle (Arlington, Va.) got the loss, going 2 1/3 innings for the Bobcats.
