Six Bobcats make all-region women’s lacrosse team

LEWISTON, Maine — Six players on the Bates College women’s lacrosse team were among the 211 players in Division III to receive All-Regional honors Wednesday from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association.

Named to the Pilgrim Region First Team were junior defender Cara Sweeney (Darien, Conn.) and junior midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.). Second Team honorees included sophomore attacker Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) and a trio of first-year players: midfielder Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio), attacker Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) and attacker Molly Radis (Portland, Maine).

All honorees are now eligible for inclusion on the IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American teams, which will be announced on May 29.

Sweeney was Bates’ steadiest defender and tied for third on the team in caused turnovers, with nine. Wagner, a team co-captain who earlier was named First Team All-NESCAC, led the Bobcats (8-7) in goals (39), points (49), ground balls (37), draw controls (35) and caused turnovers (30). She ranked third in the NESCAC in goals per game (2.60), and 50th in Division III in caused turnovers per game (2.00).

Thomas ranked second on the team in goals (21), assists (11) and points (32). Drake ranked second on the team in draw controls (26) while scoring 12 goals with five assists. Maciewicz led Bates in assists (12) and ranked second in points (28) and caused turnovers (13) and third in ground balls (23). Radis was Bates’ most potent scorer off the bench with 20 goals (third on the team) and six assists.

Bates finished the 2007 season with an 8-7 record, its first winning season since 2001.
