LEWISTON, Maine — Brendan Egan scored twice to lead Bowdoin past Bates 3-0 in men’s soccer in the season opener for both teams Saturday at Russell Street Field.
Egan (Westfield, N.J.) put the Polar Bears on top in the 19th minute, finishing off a through ball by senior Nick Figueiredo (Wilmington, Mass.) inside the penalty box by pushing it past Bates senior goalie Robert Wesley-Munro (Walpole, Mass.) and inside the far post.
Bowdoin outshot Bates 13-3 in the first half, although the Bobcats mounted more scoring threats in the second half, collecting 12 shots to Bowdoin’s 17. Bates had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the 65th minute, when first-year Dustin DiGregorio (Boxford, Mass.) squeezed past a Bowdoin defender and goalie Nathan Lovitz (Fairfield, Maine), sending the ball rolling into the Bowdoin goal, before Polar Bears defender Will Grunewald suddenly swept in to push the ball out of bounds just inches in front of the goal line.
The Polar Bears carried only the one-goal lead until Egan struck again in the 76th minute, this time eluding a defender and beating Wesley-Munro one-one-one for the 2-0 lead. Bowdoin senior Justin Ito-Adler added an insurance goal with under six minutes remaining in the game on a left-footed volley, shortly after Wesley-Munro deftly saved a similar shot by Ito-Adler.
Wesley-Munro made 11 saves for Bates, while Lovitz came up with seven for Bowdoin in earning the shutout.
Several new faces dotted the field for the Bobcats and showed promise for the team’s upcoming fortunes, among them DiGregorio, sophomore Jonathan Labozzo (New Gloucester, Maine), first-year Patrick Jackson (Durham, N.H.) and first-year Chris LaBrecque (Falmouth, Maine).
Bates will host Amherst College on Sept. 15 at 2 p.m. in a second NESCAC contest; Bowdoin will host Husson College on Sunday.
