Volleyball team edged in non-league match at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine — The Colby College volleyball team took a 3-0 win over Bates College in non-conference play Wednesday night, although the Bobcats kept each game within reach by scores of 30-26, 30-22, 30-22.
Bates (1-3) got 10 kills and nine digs from sophomore Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) and six kills apiece from first-year Phoebe Reed (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior co-captain Jenn Linton (West Redding, Conn.). Senior co-captain Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.) dished 18 assists, while sophomore Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) had nine assists and nine digs, and junior Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) finished with nine digs.
Meredith Lawler (Lynnfield, Mass.) finished with 12 kills and 20 defensive digs to lead the Mules (4-1). Colby will play host to a six-team New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) weekend of play Friday and Saturday. The Mules play against Trinity College at 6 p.m. Friday, while Bates heads back up to Waterville for an 8 p.m. Friday match with Wesleyan University.
Heather Arvidson (Andover, Mass.) and Larissa Levine (Potomac, Md.) each had 11 kills and three blocks for Colby. Jessie Prentice (New York, N.Y.) had eight kills in just two games, while Jenny Lawrence (Lafayette, Calif.) finished with 35 assists. Megan Conroy (San Francisco, Calif.) totaled five kills in one game and had 10 digs for Colby. First-year player Samantha Bassman (San Diego, Calif.) added six service aces and five digs.
