Schuler’s 78 leads golf team after first day at state championships
VASSALBORO, Maine — Bates played an impressive first round Friday at the State of Maine Intercollegiate Golf Championships, co-hosted by Thomas and Husson colleges at Natanis Golf Club.
Sophomore Kurt Schuler (Windham, N.H.) led the way for the Bobcats by firing a 78. He was followed closely by first-year Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) at 79, first-year John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) at 82 and senior Jake Cox (Sammamish, Wash.) with an 87.
With a team score of 326, the Bobcats stand in fourth place out of 11 teams heading into the final day; St. Joseph’s and Husson are tied for the lead at 316, and Bowdoin is in third at 323.
Bates continues tournament play Saturday.
