Early goal stings women’s soccer vs. Amherst
LEWISTON, Maine — Amherst College sophomore Meg Murphy scored in the sixth minute and the visiting Lord Jeffs held on for a 1-0 victory over Bates College in the first NESCAC women’s soccer contest of the season for both teams on Saturday.
Murphy (Springfield, Mass.) was assisted by junior Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, Va.) and sophomore Jillian Whiting (Clark, N.J.) on the winning play. Murphy drilled a shot from 15 yards out inside the near, left post and into the back of the net.
Amherst (1-1-2, 1-0 NESCAC) outshot Bates (1-2, 0-1 NESCAC) by a 16-6 margin, and sophomore Lili Ferguson (Winnetka, Ill.) earned the shutout win with three saves.
Bates senior goalie Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.) made three saves for the Bobcats.
Bates will host Bowdoin in another NESCAC contest on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
