CLINTON, N.Y. — Led again by sophomore Kurt Schuler, Bates College finished in a tie for ninth place as the New England Small College Athletic Conference men’s golf championships qualifier concluded on Sunday at The Skenandoa Club.
Schuler (Windham, N.H.) shot a 6-over-par 78 on Sunday for a two-day score of 155, which tied him for 15th among all players. First-year Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Jake Cox (Sammamish, Wash.) both shot a 167, followed by junior Tom Bowden (Falmouth, Maine) at 169 and junior Jeremy Rogalski (West Springfield, Mass.) at 170. Bates’ team score of 654 tied with Colby for ninth place.
Tournament medalist Josh Grossman led Trinity College to first place in the two-day tournament. Grossman finished with a 36-hole total of 146, including an even-par 72 in Sunday’s final round, as Trinity ended up with a team score of 606. The Bantams earned the right to host the first-ever championship round in April of 2008. Middlebury College, Williams College and Hamilton College will join Trinity in that championship round. The winner of the four-team event receives the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III championships.
