Volleyball team defeats Sul Ross State in Dallas

DALLAS — The Bates College volleyball team began play at the four-team University of Dallas Volleyball Festival on Friday with matches against Sul Ross State University and the host Crusaders. Bates defeated Sul Ross State University in its early match on Friday by a 3-2 score, and then fell to the host Crusaders 3-0.
The Bobcats (6-20) opened the tournament by shrugging off Wednesday night’s heart-wrenching 3-2 loss to Colby, as well as their long journey to Texas, by coming from behind to defeat Sul Ross State by scores of 30-18, 24-30, 17-30, 30-20, 15-13. Sophomore S/RS Elise Edmonson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) accumulated 28 assists, 16 digs and eight service aces in the match. Other leaders for Bates included junior Beth Billington (St. Paul, Minn.) with 12 kills and three blocks, senior Brittany Clement (Gobles, Mich.) with 15 assists and 15 digs, sophomore Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) with 10 kills and two blocks, sophomore Liz Leberman (Concord, N.H.) with nine kills and 21 digs, and sophomore Brit Johnston (Winter Park, Colo.) with 19 digs.
The host Crusaders raised their record to 11-20 with 30-26, 30-17 and 30-22. Statistical leaders for Bates included Edmonson (nine kills, 11 assists, 12 digs), Johnston (four aces, 18 digs), Masters (five kills, two blocks) and senior Jenn Linton (West Redding, Conn.) with four blocks.
Bates will finish play in Dallas on Saturday, with matches against the Franciscan University of Steubenville at 10 a.m. and against Wiley College at 12 p.m.
