Rowing teams reach new heights at Head of the Charles

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Bates men’s and women’s rowing came away with a overall team best at the historic Head of the Charles Regatta this weekend.

The 1V women’s boat, comprising Alexia (Lexie) Zhang ’10, Alison Frye ’10, Rebecca Waldo ’11, Elizabeth Martin ’10, Emily Howieson ’08, Emily Chandler ’09, Laura Hubbell ’09, Caitlin Murphy ’09 and Nora Collins ’11 (coxswain), were awarded a medal for finishing fifth in a field of 44.

Meanwhile the Bates 1V men’s boat (James Grant ’10, Brian Klein ’09, Dylan Eberle ’08, Jonathan Blanchard ’08, Tim Henderson ’09, Glenn Kelly ’10, Brad Sherman ’08, Charlie Biddle ’09 and Christian Ford ’08 [coxswain])  came ninth in a field of 42.

Both 1V boats placed top three in the conference and top four in Division III, within extremely competitive racing in which 1-2 seconds came between multiple places.

Bates’ second varsity women also competed in the event, finishing 13th and beating many first varsity squads.

These results surpass the previous team best set in 2006, when the 1V men finished 15th and 1V women finished 13th in their respective Collegiate Eight events.

Bates will round out the season with the annual Colby-Bates-Bowdoin regatta Oct. 28 at Colby.
