WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The Bates men’s cross country team placed eighth out of 11 teams at the NESCAC Cross Country Championships Saturday, hosted by Williams College at Mt. Greylock High School.
The Bobcats totaled 191 points, trailing Connecticut College by just five points and Middlebury by 13 for sixth place. Bates placed ahead of Wesleyan, Hamilton and Colby.
Bates senior Matt Dunlap (Farmington, Maine) outkicked Colby’s John Swain at the very end of the 8-kilometer course to finish 14th overall in a time of 26:44.
Sophomore Doug Brecher (Waban, Mass.) was the second Bobcat to finish, 39th overall in 27:37, followed by senior Harrison Little (Hanover, N.H.) in 42nd (27:45), sophomore Griffin Stabler (Keene, N.H.) in 49th at 27:50, first-year Alex Hegevall-Clarke (Wilmette, Ill.) in 65th (28:14), senior Andrew Percy (Woodbridge, Conn.) in 66th (28:14) and junior Dillon Tung (South Pasadena, Calif.) rounding out the top seven in 83rd (28:36).
Bates head coach Al Fereshetian cited Dunlap, Stabler and Hegevall-Clarke as turning in standout performances. “Those guys really did a nice job,” said Fereshetian. “It’s an improvement of one place from last year, so we’ll take it. We definitely moved in the right direction.”
Bates returns to the same course next Saturday for the ECAC Division III Championships.
