Hegevall-Clarke leads men’s cross country at ECACs

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — First-year Alex Hegevall-Clarke led the Bates College men’s cross country team to a 12th-place finish out of 43 teams at the ECAC Division III Championships Saturday at Williams College.
Hegevall-Clarke (Wilmette, Ill.) ran his second strong race in a week, finishing 42nd overall out of more than 240 competitors by covering the 8-kilometer course in 27:45.6. He finished fifth among a full complement of Bates runners a week beforehand on the same course at the NESCAC Championships, in 28:14 (29 seconds slower).
Next for the Bobcats came senior Tim McCall (Lawrenceville, N.J.) in 72nd at 28:18.7, first-year Tom Esponette (Auburn, Maine) in 77th at 28:29.9, junior Patrick Foster (Still River, Mass.) in 28:49.8, senior William Viti (Westwood, Mass.) in 104th place at 29:07.9 and first-year Ben Taska (Lowell, Vt.) in 146th at 30:08.1.
Bates competes at the New England Division III Championships at Connecticut College next Saturday.
