LEWISTON, Maine — Junior co-captain Izzy Alexander qualified for the 2008 Division III New England Indoor Track and Field Championships in the women’s pentathlon on Saturday, scoring 2,625 points as the indoor track and field season kicked off at the Bates Pentathlon.
Alexander (Harvard, Mass.), the 2007 New England Division III champion with 2,996 points last year, also qualified for New Englands in the 800 meters Saturday with her time of 2:27.51.
Alexander competed unopposed but for sophomore teammate Lily Gordon (Scarsdale, N.Y.), who was tuning up for the upcoming season by competing in only four of the day’s five events.
On the men’s side, Bates senior John Miley (Hanson, Mass.) took first place and set a new Bates record while he was at it. Miley scored 3,472 points, breaking the previous mark of 3,381, owned by Joe Northrup ’05, and outpacing Tufts University’s Nate Scott by 50 points for the coveted top spot in the first competition of the 2007-08 indoor track and field season.
