Bates senior John Mileywon the Bates Pentathlon last Saturday and set a new Bates record while he was at it. Miley scored 3,472 points, breaking the previous mark of 3,381, owned by Joe Northrup’05, and outpacing Tufts University’s Nate Scott by 50 points for the coveted top spot in the first competition of the 2007-08 indoor track and field season.In their previous meeting at last year’s New Englands, Miley (Hanson, Mass.) was the runner-up to Scott while posting a then-personal best 3,364 points.
En route to his record point total, Miley, a team co-captain for a second year, qualified for the New England Division III Championships in both the long jump (20 feet, 8 inches) and the high jump (6 feet, 2 1/4 inches).

Bates junior Val Beckwithrecorded a season-high 23 points and a career-high six assists to lead the Bates women’s basketball team to a 93-62 win at UMaine-Farmington last week. She made 9 of 16 field goal attempts and was 5-for-5 at the free throw line. The win put the Bobcats above the .500 mark for the first time this season, at 3-2.Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) has picked up where she left off last season, when she earned NESCAC First Team All-Conference honors. She leads the Bobcats in the young season at 15.8 points per game, which ranks her third in the NESCAC, is shooting at a .485 clip from the floor and averages 4.8 rebounds per game.
Bates next competes at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on Dec. 19-20, with games against Washington & Jefferson College and Washington (Md.) College.
