SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Bates College senior Meg Coffin passed the 1,000 career points milestone, leading the Bobcats to a 77-52 thrashing of William Paterson University in the first round of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic Thursday at Springfield College.
Coffin (Westford, Mass.), who entered the game with 993 points, scored 15 and added a game-high 11 rebounds as Bates ended the Pioneers’ (7-3) six-game winning streak. She shot 6-for-11 from the floor and added three steals while becoming the 14th Bates woman to reach the 1,000-point plateau, and the first since Olivia Zurek ’05.
Junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points with four steals for the Bobcats (5-3), while senior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) flirted with a triple-double, with a career-high nine assists, eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) returned from a six-game injury stint to score 12 points, while senior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) scored eight points with six assists.
Junior forward Asia Johnson (Wildwood, N.J.) was the lone Pioneer in double figures, with 16 points. Johnson added game-high totals of 13 rebounds and three blocks.
Coffin’s 1,000th point arrived in the midst of a 24-3 Bates run, which served to put the Bobcats in the lead for good. With 4:15 left in the first half her layup off of a Kostakis assist gave Bates a 27-11 lead and Coffin 1,000 for her career.
Bates will face NESCAC rival Wesleyan University tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. in the tournament championship game. Wesleyan defeated host Springfield 70-55 in the earlier first-round game.
