Dartmouth leads after first day of Bates Winter Carnival
RUMFORD, Maine — Defending NCAA champion Dartmouth College took the early lead after the first day of the three-day Bates College Winter Carnival, which kicks off the 2008 Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) winter carnival season.
Alpine ski events at Sunday River have been pushed back one day due to Friday’s warm and rainy local weather. Saturday’s slate will include men’s and women’s slalom, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at Sunday River in Bethel, as well as the Men’s and Women’s 10K Classic nordic races, which begin at 9 a.m. at Black Mountain in Rumford. The Bates Carnival will conclude on Sunday with the giant slalom at Sunday River.
Dartmouth leads with 176 points, 26 more than runner-up Middlebury, thanks in part to first-place performances in both the Women’s 5K Free Technique and Men’s 10K Free Technique races. Dartmouth won the women’s race as a team, while on the men’s side Colby College collected the most points.
