First-years shine for men’s Alpine team at St. Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — Emily Sampson’s ninth-place finish led the Bates College women’s Alpine ski team to fifth place in the slalom on Saturday at the St. Lawrence University Winter Carnival, helping the Bates ski teams to a second straight fifth-place finish in the carnival season.

Bates’ ski teams combined for 381 points, six ahead of Colby for fifth place at the carnival, the Bobcats’ second straight week in fifth. Dartmouth won with 587.5 points, followed by Middlebury (555), Vermont (527.5) and New Hampshire (459).

Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) had a two-run combined time of 1:32.30, ninth best out of 54 competitors, to earn 23 team points for Bates on the day. Senior Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine) had a second straight solid day, with identical runs of 46.82 seconds good for 17th place. Junior Perry Kleeman (Litchfield, Conn.) came in 24th in 1:39.13.

On the men’s side, first-year Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) led the Bobcats for the first time, placing 11th overall out of 54 skiers with at two-run combined time of 1:26.57. Classmate Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) followed in 16th place at 1:27.06, and first-year John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) had his best day thus far with a 24th-place showing (1:31.42).

Friday’s Action

In Friday’s action in the giant slalom, Fahy had the Bobcats’ top day, placing ninth out of 54 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:08.63. First-year Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) was 16th in 2:09.84, while juniors Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) and Sampson were 21st and 24th, respectively, in 2:10.80 and 2:12.40. Junior Megan Papineau (Keene, N.Y.) had the team’s best run of the day in 1:01.18 but she did not finish her second run.

On the men’s side, seniors Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) and Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) finished 1-2 for the Bobcats for the third straight day of competition. Loman was 13th out of 54 competitors with a combined time of 2:04.12, and Menard was right behind him in 16th at 2:04.22. First-years Manter and Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) also finished in the top 30 at 19th and 29th, respectively, in 2:04.91 and 2:07.90.

Next up for the Bates ski team is the UVM Winter Carnival, starting Friday Jan. 25 at Stowe, Vt.
