Ellis named Maine men’s Rookie of the Week

Brian Ellis ’11 is emerging as a top candidate for NESCAC Rookie of the Year.

LEWISTON, Maine — Bates first-year forward Brian Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) was awarded with Rookie of the Week honors by the Maine Men’s Basketball Coaches and Writers Association, the MMBCWA announced on Tuesday.

Ellis averaged 19.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game as the Bobcats (8-5) endured tough losses at Trinity and Amherst, including a 77-76 defeat at the No. 3 nationally ranked Lord Jeffs’ home gym. Ellis hit 13 of 22 shots from the field on the week (.594) and also made 3 of 5 three-pointers (.600).

Averaging 13.6 points per game, Ellis ranks 10th in the NESCAC and is the only rookie among the conference’s top 30 scorers. Ellis also leads the Bobcats in rebounding and stands 17th in the NESCAC at 5.3 boards per game, and he leads the team in field goal percentage (.598), the NESCAC’s fifth-highest percentage.

Bates travels to UMass-Boston for a non-league game Thursday night at 7 p.m.
