Nordic ski team finishes strong in sprints at UVM Carnival
STOWE, Vt. — The Bates women’s Nordic ski team notched a respectable sixth-place finish out of 11 teams in the Freestyle Sprints and the Bates men were seventh as the UVM Winter Carnival concluded on Saturday.
The Bates ski team as a whole finished seventh out of 11 teams at the carnival, their first time out of the top five this season.
A trio of first-year skiers led the Bobcat women, with Ingrid Knowles (Cumberland, Maine) 17th out of 62 competitors with a time of 3:31.87, followed by Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.) in 20th and Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in 25th. Junior Nicole Ritchie (East Dummerston, Vt.) placed 30th.
Junior Dylan Mogk (Bozeman, Mont.) led Bates in the Men’s Classic Sprints, tying for 12th out of 60 competitors with a tme of 2:52.20. Junior Sylvan Ellefson (Vail, Colo.) was 15th, close behind in 2:54.91, while Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) came in 22nd and sophomore Harry Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) placed 31st.
On Friday, the Bates men’s Nordic ski team finished fifth out of 11 teams in the 10K Classic Mass Start race. Bates junior Sam Evans-Brown (Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H.) led Bates with a 12th-place finish out of 64 skiers in the Men’s 10K Classic, checking in with a time of 30:09.5. Junior Tim Whiton (Portland, Maine) was next in 22nd place in 30:53.6, followed closely behind by Mogk in 25th, Ellefson in 27th and Poole in 29th.
McClelland led the Bates women to eighth place as a unit in the Women’s 10K Classic, placing 26th out of 66 skiers in a time of 37:03.8. First-year Kirsten Gill and sophomore Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) were 33rd and 34th, respectively.
Next up for the Bates ski team will be the Dartmouth Carnival next weekend.
