Sampson sixth in slalom at UVM Carnival as Bates places 7th

STOWE, Vt. — Bates junior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) had a big day in the slalom, placing sixth out of 57 competitors to lead the Bates alpine ski team on the second and final day of the UVM Winter Carnival.
The Bates ski team as a whole finished seventh out of 11 teams at the carnival, their first time out of the top five this season.
Bates placed fourth in the men’s slalom, with three skiers in the top 18 out of 59 competitors. First-year Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) placed 12th with a two-run combined time of 1:33.40, followed by senior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) in 14th and senior Kevin Berry (Portsmouth, N.H.) in a tie for 18th.
Sampson’s combined time of 1:42.60 in the women’s slalom scored 28 points for the Bates cause. First-year Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) was the second Bates woman for the second straight day, placing 17th, while senior Melissa Jones (Plymouth, N.H.) and first-year Lauren McAllister (Bethel, Maine) squeezed into the top 30 at 28th and 30th, respectively.
On Friday, junior Liz Thompson placed 10th out of 57 competitors in the women’s giant slalom. Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) had a two-run combined time of 2:02.28, including a top run of 1:00.13, scoring 25 of Bates’ points for the day.
Holland came next for the Bobcat women, placing 16th with a combined time of 2:04.06. McAllister placed 37th.
First-year Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) led the Bates men’s alpine unit in the GS, registering a combined time of 1:58.56 for 24th place out of 59 competitors in the men’s GS. Senior Matt Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) stepped up with a 30th-place time of 2:00.06, and first-year John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.) finished 35th.
Next up for the Bates ski team will be the Dartmouth Carnival next weekend.
