Alpine team strong in the slaloms at Dartmouth Carnival

HANOVER, N.H. — The Bates College women’s alpine ski team placed fifth out of 10 teams in the slalom Saturday at the Dartmouth College Winter Carnival, while the men’s alpine squad finished seventh.
Bates finished seventh out of 11 teams at the carnival with 469 points. Host Dartmouth won with 725. Through four carnivals this season, Bates has two fifth-place showings and two seventh-place showings.
Bates juniors Liz Thompson (Rangeley, Maine) and Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) led the Bobcats in the women’s slalom with 11th- and 13th-place performers, respectively, out of 59 competitors. Thompson recorded a two-run combined time of 1:47.59, Sampson 1:48.08. A third past NCAA Championships competitor, Bates senior Whitney Fahy (Carrabassett Valley, Maine), finished in a three-way tie for 18th place at 1:49.51 to add 21 team points to Thompson and Sampson’s 50.
On the men’s side, senior Leo Menard (Portland, Maine) and freshman Ben Manter (Vassalboro, Maine) tied for 19th place out of 59 competitors, with a two-run combined time of 1:37.76. First-year Ross Brockman (Sudbury, Mass.) placed 35th.
The first day of the Dartmouth Winter Carnival saw both the men’s and women’s alpine teams place seventh in the giant slaloms.
First-year Micaela Holland (Belmont, Mass.) had the best day for Bates, placing 21st out of 58 competitors with a two-run combined time of 2:02.54. Emily Sampson came in 28th.
Senior Dan Loman (Killington, Vt.) led the men’s alpine unit in the GS by finishing 27th out of 60 skiers, with a combined time of 1:57.34, while Ross Brockman, Ben Manter and Leo Menard occupied spots 33 through 35, respectively.
Bates will compete at the Williams College Carnival next Friday in the penultimate carnival of the EISA season.
