Alexander sets Bates record in 600 meters at Tufts Invite

MEDFORD, Mass. — Bates junior Izzy Alexander (Harvard, Mass.) broke the Bates record in the indoor 600-meter run Saturday, highlighting the Bates women’s indoor track and field team’s day at the non-scoring Tufts Invitational, which included athletes from all divisions around New England.

Alexander finished the 600 in 1:37.71, breaking the former program record of 1:38.38 set in 2006 by Ashley Wentworth ’06. Alexander finished third overall out of 20 women in the race.

Other highlights for Bates included sophomore Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine), who set a personal record in the shot put, finsihing second out of 27 women in 40’10.25″. Duncan won the 20-pound weight throw in 54’09.50″, while senior teammate Cassandra Kirkland (Greene, Maine) was the runner-up among 19 women in 49’09.00″.

Bates came in second out of 11 schools in the 4×400 meter relay and put up the No. 2 fastest time in program history. Alexander, senior Amy Rosania (Rye Beach, N.H.), first-year Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.) and junior Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) finished in 4:05.16.

Rosania also ran an excellent 1,000-meter run, finishing in 3:06.82 for ninth place out of 31 women and the No. 8 spot on Bates’ all-time performance list.

Bates will travel to Smith College on Friday for the New England Division III Indoor Championships.
